Ben Carson reportedly got a bit of the Ted Cruz treatment when he was stopped last week from greeting the crowds in front of the Capitol Building for Pope Francis‘s visit.
The Hill reported today that Carson was the guest of Rep. Mark Sanford, who hoped to escort Carson to the Speaker’s Balcony so that he could wave to the crowd before the Pope’s appearance. A contact from Speaker John Boehner‘s office, however, said that the doctor-turned-presidential candidate was turned away by security.
Francis’s visit and speech before Congress have been considered a historic moment by many figures within the media. While Carson missed his chance to appear before the thousands of waiting visitors, he was able to attend the Pope’s House speech alongside other 2016 contenders that included Bernie Sanders and Marco Rubio.
